The genre doesn’t matter, but I’d prefer the guitarist to be either country, rock, blues or jazz, for the most part.
Just list some guitarists and what band they’re from or if they’re a solo artist!
Also, please mention what genre each guitarist is known for playing.
Starlight Bev *pro-darkness&goat: Come on–everyone knows about SRV!
Some of you are listing people like Jimmy Page, SRV, B.B. King, etc. I mean, those guitarists are all great, but I’d prefer it if you’d all list guitarists that aren’t that famous, such as the great Danny Gatton…he was outstanding, but many had never heard of him.
musicatto: I’m surprised anyone mentioned Jerry Reed at all! Both Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins are two of my favorites!
As for anyone who suggests Slash: he’s highly overrated.
Carlos freakin’ Santana, my friend. From the band Santana. #15 on Roling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All Time
Stevie Ray Vaughan #7 on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All Time
BB King – #3 of Rolling Stone’s Top 100 guitarists of all time.
Jimi Hendrix – #1 on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All Time
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin – #9 on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All Time
EDIT
Santana – Latin Rock
SRV – Blues
BB King – Jazz
Hendrix – Rock
Page – Rock/Metal
EDIT2
You never said they had to be somewhat obscure. Etiehr way, I stick with Carlos Santana, he is my favorite.
also, if you want metal, Jani Liimatainen. He’s well-known, but he is a GOD.
Also, on that note, Elias Viljanen is amazing, too.
Jani is currently playing with Sydänpuu.
Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson of Sigur Ros. He’s not particularly great, but the band have a great sound (post-rock)

The Essential Guide To Guitar Virtuosity is not your typical guitar instructional ebook. It is not a theory book, or how to build guitar solos from scales, rather it is a guitar exercise training ebook.

I’m not really sure what genre she is exactly. Most of her stuff is acoustic, and according to Wikipedia, she’s post-rock, instrumental rock, and experimental rock, if that helps.

Slash, from Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver. He is an intense rock musician and if you’re looking for a guy who can shred, your search is over.
If you’re into mellower music, try Iron and Wine. The guitarist is amazing. It’s very unique and I’m not sure how I’d categorize it. "Boy With a Coin" is a fantastic song.
A good WORLD musician is Benise. It’s not my cup of tea really, but Benise is full of talent.
The White Stripes are more of an alternative rock band. Jack White plays simple pieces and it’s more about the vocals if you like them… but those two are bad a$$.
Curtain Call is an up and coming band with a bunch of my friends, but they made it onto iTunes and Bill plays the best guitar of anyone I’ve ever met, Hendrix style (right handed guitar that he plays LEFT HANDED). You would not believe how old he is if you knew. Check out "Steal Her" and you won’t be disapointed with Bill.
Hope I helped. If all else fails, go with Interpol. They are the best band in the history of the world. "Roland", "No I in Threesome", "NARC", "Evil", "C’mere", "Wrecking Ball", and "The Lighthouse" will heal any imperfections in your soul.

I know this is probably not your genre…but I could not help mentioning his name. Chuck Schuldiner is recognized as one of the most influential metal guitarists in history. His band Death was one of the first bands to implement jazz structure in death metal. Apart from metal music, he also enjoyed classical and jazz. Unfortunately, this great musician passed away in the early 2000s. His music still lives on though…
(Watching him play on video is something…)
